Native American Portraits

Nothing is more intriguing to look at than another human being.
Each face is a puzzle of individuality, revealing as much as it hides.
Each body, regardless of haw it’s clothed, commands our attention with
its strength and its vulnerability.
Photography exploits our fascination by enabling us to scrutinize without restraint.
Just recently I stumbled upon a collection of such photographs, accumulated by
Kurt Koegler, and some can be seen at Andrew Smith Gallery in Santa Fe NM.
Those historical images of Native Americans were produced between 1858 – 1920.
They all lived during an era of enormous change.
Repeatedly forced to relocate to make way for railroads, miners, and homesteaders.
During their lifetime, the frontier disappeared, as did the great herds of buffalo.
